Hi, I’m Maya!

This is a bit about my story.
Not to be dramatic, but ever since I can remember I’ve dreamed of being an artist. I grew up loving singing, dancing, drawing, painting and crafting. Anything where I felt like I could express myself to the world around me.
Back in 2018, I moved to New Zealand from my home town in Western Australia. Without any family or friends around me, I turned to art! I would paint and draw which lead me to posting my art online and getting requests to sell things! This turned into making prints, journals, cards and original paintings! I did some local Christchurch markets and loved meeting people and talking about art! At the time I worked full-time in hospitality so I couldn’t dedicate much time to this new endeavour which at the time was called ‘flowers on the coffee table’- such a long and funny name looking back and it did lead to people thinking I was selling flowers… I eventually changed the name to Maya Jade Art. Jade is my middle name and I’ve always loved it and I thought ‘art’ was broad enough to include all the different mediums I love.
In 2021, my boyfriend and I (now husband) moved to Australia, 30 minutes away from my childhood home. My Mum and I had always wanted to do a pottery so I decided to book a class since I was home again. It was a simple hand-building class in a backyard and it was amazing. I was instantly addicted. I remember feeling so excited and inspired by our lovely afternoon playing with clay. I immediately started looking on YouTube to see how hard it would be to make a mug- very, apparently. Pottery isn’t like anything I had done before because it required such dedication and patience and… a kiln. Because I’m an all or nothing kind of person, I bought a 1960’s kiln from Facebook marketplace only a little while after trying pottery for the first time. I spent the rest of 2021 experimenting with hand-building, wheel throwing, firing and glazing.
In 2023 my husband and I moved back to Christchurch (so much moving!!!). I was excited to show the pottery I had been working on in my time back home. It’s been such an amazing response. Even though I’ve been doing pottery for 4 years, I feel like it’s only been in the last year and a half that it’s started to really gain momentum. I’m now potting full-time, creating pieces for local markets and special custom pieces for my amazing customers!
I proudly hand mould and paint each mug to be one of a kind using locally sourced clay and glaze in my small home in Christchurch. When I’m not making your orders, I’m baking, watching movies, doing ballet, cafe hopping, FaceTiming my little sister and hanging out with my amazing husband and friends.
Thank you so much for being here and supporting my dream.
